Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

General Author guidelines

 Preparing the manuscript for submission to Journal of Health Systems (JHS) is a process that requires meticulous planning, diligent writing and attention to details. It will be good to read our peer-review guidelines to know in advance about reviewer expectations.

 The following word processor file formats are acceptable for the main manuscript document typed in unjustified format, using Arial font size 11 and 1.5 line spacing: Microsoft Word (DOC, DOCX) or Rich Text Format (RTF) or Open Document Format (ODT)

 We invite article under the following categories

  • Editorials
  • Blogs
  • Letters (rapid responses)
  • Personal Views

 Whatever the category of the articles submitted, please ensure that they all confirm to JHS’s General Author guidelines

 Guidelines for Manuscript Preparation

  1. Title page with cover letter: All articles submitted should have a title page uploaded as a separate document that contains the title of the paper, the category of submission, detailed author information, and full contact details of corresponding author. Full names of authors must be used with initials expanded. Any one author can be corresponding author.
  2. The title page should be uploaded as a supplementary file while submitting the manuscript (download the format here).
  3. Main document: The first page of the main document should contain the title, abstract and keywords followed by the full text of the article.
  4. The full text should incorporate everything including tables, images, graphs and references in appropriate places. This helps to provide our reviewers with a single file and avoiding them the trouble of searching through multiple documents.
  5. Use the model template while preparing the title page, cover letter and the main document as far as possible with suitable modifications required as you feel depending on the type of article
  6. No names should be mentioned in the main document. Abstract is mandatory and should form part of the main document
  7. Take note that images and pictures should be mentioned and inserted properly in the document, but should be uploaded separately as well as high quality images
  8. Plagiarism is a very common pitfall while writing scientific papers, and it often happens inadvertently. We use a robust and highly accurate plagiarism-checking engine. Please make sure to read our plagiarism guidelines before submitting.
  9. Authors should try their best to use a professional writing style and avoid lay language.
  10. Tables should be sequentially numbered and pasted in appropriate locations in the document and should be resized to fit inside the page.
  11. Graphs and Charts should use simple, two-dimensional styles without any designer effects. We recommend MS Excel for creating charts.
  12. Tables should use simple wireframe styles without any colours or effects and should be editable. Best created in the word processor programme itself.
  13. Original full resolution jpeg versions of photographs (if any) should be uploaded as supplementary files while submitting the manuscript.
  14. Conflicts of Interest statement, Acknowledgements and Financial Support should be mentioned clearly in the Title page cum cover letter page (download format here). A conflict of interest or competing interest exists when your interpretation of data or presentation of information may be influenced by your personal or financial relationship with other people or organizations.
  15. Authors must disclose any financial competing interests; they should also reveal any non-financial competing interests that may cause them embarrassment were they to become public after the publication of the article.
  16. References should be created in the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) format also known as the Vancouver Up-to-date information on this style of referencing can be found on the official ICMJE page. We recommend using the free reference management programme Zotero for creating references.
  17. Format used for data collection if any, should be uploaded as supplementary file while submitting the manuscript.

 Specific Guidelines for Research Articles (download model template for research article)

  1. To encourage completeness in reporting of research we do not set fixed limits for the length of research articles in JHS. However we believe that most of the research articles can well be within a word limit of 6000
  2. Title should be descriptive and should contain enough information for readers to understand what the study is about.
  3. Abstract should not be of more than 400 words and should be structured, containing background, objectives, methods, results and conclusions.
  4. Keywords – four to eight comma separated keywords representing the topic of the article.
  5. Full text should contain Background and Rationale, Objectives, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusions, End Notes and References.
  6. Background – elaborating the existing knowledge scenario with regard to the research question and how this study would add to it.
  7. Objectives of the Study – Numbered output indicators that the study tries to look into (aims of the study).
  8. Methods – includes study design, study subjects, inclusion and exclusion criteria, sample size and sampling methods, materials used, duration, data collection, data analysis and ethical considerations.
  9. Results – the findings of the study presented in the form of statistical indicators, figures and tables.
  10. Discussion – Evaluation of the results in the light of existing evidence.
  11. Conclusions – Final deductions arrived at and new knowledge obtained at the end of the study.
  12. Limitations – describes the limitations of the study.
  13. Endnotes section should Conflicts of Interest statement, Acknowledgements and Financial Support.
  14. References should be in Vancouver style

 Specific Guidelines for Analysis Articles

  1. The Analysis section of the journal is a forum for discussions on science, ethics, and policy concerned with public health issues in general and heath systems specifically, with about 1800- 2500 words
  2. Title should be descriptive and should contain enough information for readers to understand what the article is about.
  3. Introduction: Articles should begin with a brief paragraph that captures readers’ attention and explains the aim of the piece.
  4. Main text: Use different and appropriate sub headings for the main text that provide a logical narrative structure. Avoid acronyms and abbreviations unless they are universally recognized
  5. Boxes, tables, figures or illustrations excluded from the word count of the body of the text, but the additional material should be concise. Try to attach the images separately in addition to including in the main text
  6. Key messages: This is a box at the end of the article containing 2-4 points summing up the main conclusions.
  7. References: Must be in Vancouver style and should be kept to a minimum; ideally no more than 20
